LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's volleyball team won their conference opener when they defeated visiting Southern Vermont College in five sets, 17-25, 25-19, 26-24, 20-25, 15-7 on Tuesday night at the Leicester Gymnasium.
It was the league opener for both teams. The Hawks of Becker improve their overall record to 8-10 on the season and 1-0 in the NECC while the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont fall to 1-16 and 0-1 in conference play.
Becker sophomore outside hitter Gillian Criddle (Earleville, Md. / Bohemia Manor) led the way with 17 kills and a .417 hitting percentage, both career-highs. Junior middle blocker Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J. / Bronx) also had a big night with 15 kills and a .389 hitting percentage. Senior setter Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) set the table with 38 set assists, a team-high three service aces and 11 digs. Sophomore right side Morgan Gould (North Attleboro, Mass. / Tri-County) finished with eight kills and 13 digs while junior defensive specialist Courtney Cotnoir (Douglas, Mass. / Douglas) tallied 40 digs.
Southern Vermont was led by junior outside hitter Liv Sowles (Sacramento, Calif. / McClatchy) with 28 kills, 22 digs and three aces. Freshman outside hitter Nikki Ramirez (West Covina, Calif. / Bishop Amat Memorial) tallied 16 kills and 12 digs while sophomore Abigail Landon (South Glens Falls, N.Y. / South Glens Falls) posted 48 set assists.
The Hawks have already played five matches that have gone to five sets this season, losing the first two but winning the last three.
Becker is back on the court on Thursday when they travel to Worcester State for a 7:00 p.m. matchup. Southern Vermont hosts Mitchell College on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in their next contest.
