LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 record to start their season on Saturday at the Leicester Gymnasium, with straight set victories over visiting Anna Maria College and Castleton University in a Tri-Match.
In the Tri-Match opener, the Hawks triumphed over the crosstown rival AMCATs, 25-12, 25-17, 25-7. Senior middle-blocker Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J. / Bronx Science) filled the stat line with five kills, seven service aces and one solo block. Junior middle-blocker Gillian Criddle (Earleville, Md. / Bohemia Manor) hit .462 for the match with seven kills and two block-assists. Junior outside hitter Sofia Cullina (Deep River, Conn. / Valley Regional) reeled off nine service aces while junior right-side Morgan Gould (North Attleboro, Mass. / Tri-County) led the defense with a team-high 12 digs. Collectively, the Hawks recorded 21 aces.
Anna Maria was led by senior outside hitter Sarah Lathrop (Waterford, Conn / Waterford) with six kills.
In the neutral match between Anna Maria and the Spartans of Castleton, the AMCATS prevailed in four sets, 25-23, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-23. Lathrop posted 10 points in the match including four kills and 14 digs. Junior Hanna Mitchell (Pittsfield, Mass) had a match-high 13.5 points including a match-high 13 kills. Freshman Megan Drew (Upton, Mass) also recorded double digit points, with 11 including five kills. Victoria Falco (Marlborough, Mass) led the team in digs for the second match in a row with 15.
For Castleton, Shannon Manchester had a match-high 13.5 points, with a team-high 10 kills. Three players had double digit digs for the Spartans; Meghan Zwatasky had a match-high 16, Madison Hamelink and Brianna Hake each had 11.
In the finale against Castleton, Becker finished the day with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-12 victory. Dupree was dominant up front with a .818 hitting percentage, nine kills, and 2.5 blocks. Criddle added six kills and three solo blocks while freshman libero Joanna Bampi (Peabody, Mass. / Peabody Veterans) had 11 digs and two aces. Junior setter Olivia McGuinness (Colchester, Conn. / Bacon Academy) had 11 set assists and four service aces.
Hamelink finished with six kills for the Spartans.
Becker will be back on the court on Tuesday when they travel to Salem State University for a 7:00 p.m.
