Bernier’s brace not enough as Regis outlasts Field Hockey

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College field hockey team lost 6-2 to visiting Regis College on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field in Leicester.

The Pride of Regis (3-4) Got on the board first six minutes into the game when freshman forward Jamie Juskiewicz (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) took a pass from junior midfielder Alycia LeConche (Simsbury, Conn. / Simsbury) and finished to put the visitors up 1-0. In the 17th minute, Regis senior forward Emily McDonald (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth North) scored, assisted by senior forward Hailee Forest (Amherst, N.H. / Souhegan) as the Pride went up by two. Two-and-a-half minutes later, sophomore Ashley Chipman (Stoughton, Mass. / Stoughton) took it in herself as Regis took a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Hawks of Becker (0-8) fought to get back in the game, as in the 22nd minute sophomore midfielder Katherine Bernier (Dudley, Mass. / Shepherd Hill Regional) scored unassisted for the first goal of her collegiate career, pulling the hosts to within two goals at 3-1. Regis closed out the first half with another score as, in the 26th minute, junior midfielder Yvonne Abate (Easton, Mass. / Oliver Ames) found Chipman for another score, and the Pride went into the break leading 4-1.

In the second half, Abate wasted no time getting Regis back into the scoring column, scoring her second goal of the season unassisted in the 37th minute. In the 44th minute, Regis sophomore Mary Costantino (Abington, Mass. / Notre Dame Academy) put the Pride up 6-1 with her second goal of the season.

With just 6:03 in the game and the Hawks still trailing, Becker sophomore midfielder Amy Cooper (Monument, Colo. / Lewis Palmer) found Bernier for her second goal of the season. The final score of 6-2.

Becker junior goalkeeper Alexis Barry (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) finished the day with five saves. Regis senior goalkeeper Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J. / Haddon Heights) tallied three stops in 54 minutes. The Pride outshot the Hawks, 18-6.

Becker will be back on the field on Thursday when they go crosstown to face the Cougars of Clark University in a 6:00 p.m. matchup. Regis hosts the Wildcats of Wheelock College on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
