NEWTON, Mass. - Lasers freshman Mya Maxim (South China, Maine) took advantage on an odd player rush, scoring her second goal of the game and provided the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over the Becker Hawks on Friday afternoon from Grellier Field.
Nearly three minutes into overtime and coming off a foul just over midfield, Maxim received a pass, which she touched around a Hawks defender, creating a 2-on-1 opportunity. Maxim elected to shoot as she crossed into the penalty circle, beating Becker sophomore goalie Baileigh Griese (Woodstock, N.Y.), securing the overtime victory for Lasell.
Becker opened the scoring in the second period with sophomore forward Emily Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass.) netting her first of the season, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Iacovelli scored her second early in the third quarter, doubling the lead to 2-0.
Lasell relied on two goals in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Senior Izzy Contois (Conway, Mass.) broke the shutout with 12:27 remaining in regulation.
Maxim scored on a penalty corner in the final three minutes to tie the game at 2-2 and force the overtime period.
Griese made four saves for Becker while Lasell's junior goalie Sydney Pignone (Ipswich, Mass.) made six saves, picking up the win.
The win moves Lasell to 1-0 while the overtime loss in the season opener drops Becker to 0-1.
The Hawks return to action next Tuesday in their home opener, welcoming Regis College to Alumni Field for a 4:00 p.m. match.
