Men's Basketball rally fizzles to Newbury

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College men's basketball team lost 83-74 to visiting Newbury College on Saturday in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action at the Leicester Gymnasium on the Becker campus in Leicester.

• Senior forward Dewayne Thomas (Lowell, Mass. / Lowell) led Becker with 23 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Thomas shot 3-for-7 from behind the arc.
• Junior forward Antonio White Jr. (Middletown, Conn. / Middletown) finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
• Senior guard Kareem Davis (Lowell, Mass. / St. John's) scored 14 points, pulled down four rebounds, dished out four assists and tallied four steals.
• Sophomore Jamir Carr (Philadelphia, Penn. / Universal Audenried) added nine points and four blocks.
• Sophomore forward Mateus Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil / Colegio Pedroso e Oliveira) added six assists while scoring seven points.
• Collectively, Becker had a season-best 10 blocks.

• Senior guard Omar Williams (Queens, N.Y. / Benjamin N. Cardozo) led Newbury with 25 points, including four-of-nine from behind the arc.
• Senior guard Tank Roberson (Pittsfield, Mass. / St. Joseph) finished with 18 points while dishing out seven assists.
• Senior forward Pierce Weatherspoon (Hartford, Conn. / Wethersfield) finished with 17 points, seven boards and four blocks.
• Sophomore forward Tim Deng (Portland, Maine / Deering High School) posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
• Newbury collectively shot 45 percent from behind the arc, on 9-of-20 shooting.

• The Nighthawks used a 16-4 run midway through the first half to go up by double-digits, ultimately leading by as much as 18 before heading into halftime with a 48-31 advantage.
• Down by 17 with 11:15 to go in the game, Becker rallied with an 11-0 run capped off with two free throws by Thomas with 8:03 to go and the score at 67-61. That was as close as they would come, however, as Newbury went five-of-six from the line in the final minute to put the game away.

The Hawks will be back on the court on Tuesday when they travel to Lesley University for an 8:00 p.m. game. The Nighthawks will travel to Fisher College for their next game, that coming on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
