Leicester, Mass. -The Buccaneers of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy tallied six fourth-quarter goals in coming from behind to stun the Hawks of Becker, 9-7, in Men's Lacrosse action on Thursday evening at the Alumni Field. Massachusetts Maritime is now 3-3 while Becker falls to 0-6.
Becker took an early lead in the game when Joe Ignagni (Kingston, Mass.) scored just 1:13 into the game. Alex Hurd (Chelmsford, Mass.) had two goals on the day, while Jeff Petersen (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished with a goal and two assists. Goalkeeper Josh Smith (Lewes, Del.) was tremendous four three-and-a-half quarters, finishing with 19 saves. The Hawks led for all but 8 minutes, 7 seconds of the 60 minute game, going up 6-3 after a goal by Michael Whalen (Warwick, R.I.) just 11 seconds into the final period.
Massachusetts Maritime stormed back with a furious rally, scoring five consecutive goals with two of those coming from Drew Prowse (Wakefield, Mass.) to take the lead. John Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass.) and Jay Sousa (Dartmouth, Mass.) each finished with a pair of goals, with Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, Mass.), Adam Palilonis (Hightstown, N.J.) and Dylan Freudenberg (Islip, N.Y.) each racking up a goal and an assist. Bickley's goal tied the game at 6-6 with 7:06 left.
After the Hawks pulled to within one on a goal by Petersen with 1:04 left in the game, an aggressive Buccaneers defense forced Becker to turn it over, leading to the insurance goal by Sousa with 25 seconds left to effectively put the game out of reach.
Becker returns to actions on Saturday, March 24, when they host the Eagles of Daniel Webster at 12:00pm.
