MALBOROUGH, Mass.- The SUNY Canton women's ice hockey team scored three third period goals to skate past Becker College 4-3 in Colonial Hockey Conference action on Friday night at the New England Sports Center. The Roos improve to 5-14-1 (5-3-1 CHC) while Becker slides to 2-17 (2-7 CHC).
The teams were evenly matched for the first period with each squad posting seven shots in the frame. SUNY Canton held a 1-0 lead on Logan Conger's fourth goal of the season, after twenty minutes.
Becker controlled the play from the opening faceoff of the second period, scoring three unanswered goals. Freshman Catherine McShera (Marston Mills, Mass.) evened the score at 1-1 with an unassisted shorthanded goal at the 1:18 mark, for her first collegiate tally. Next Brittany Aiello (Franklin Park, Ill.) would give the Hawks their first lead of the night with a power-play score. As the Hawks controlled the play in the zone, Aiello made a nifty tip off the stick of Hannah Elmer's (Chicopee, Mass.) shot from the point for a 2-1 advantage. Becker then capitalized on a second man-advantage, just three seconds into play with the extra skater Ann Marie Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season with just under three minutes to play in the period to push the lead to 3-1 heading into intermission.
SUNY Canton would not quit and battled back in the third period for the win. After a pair of power-play goals from Reagan Lynn and Rhea Coad tied the game at 3-3, freshman Mariah McCue tallied the game-winner at the 9:49 mark to propel SUNY Canton to the win.
Hawks netminder Julia Johnson (Littleton, Colo.) turned aside 28 shots in the loss, while her counterpart sophomore Rebecca DiNardo posed 16 saves for her fourth win of the season.
The teams will face-off again tomorrow afternoon at 12:50 p.m. at the New England Sports Center.
