MALBOROUGH, Mass.- The Becker College women's ice hockey team was defeated by Salem State University 3-2 in Colonial Hockey Conference action Friday evening at the New England Sports Center. The win lifts the Vikings record to 4-17-0 (4-8-0 CHC) while the Ice Hawks sink to 3-18-0 (2-9-0 CHC).
After a scoreless first period, Brittany Aiello (Franklin Park, Ill.) put Becker on the board when she beat Salem goalie Jenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.) with a wrist shot into the top right corner for a power-play goal. The Ice Hawks added to their lead with 25 seconds remaining in the second period when Claudia Gee (Randolph, Vt.) scored off a face-off on an assist from Gina Beth Manganiello (Peabody, Mass.).
Salem State began their comeback 2:39 into the third period when Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.) backhanded a shot over the head of Becker goalie Julia Johnson's (Littleton, Colo.) head. With 15:08 remaining in the third period, Alexandria Breen (Salem, N.H.) put back a rebound from a Jacqueline Sindoris (Charlestown, Mass.) shot to tie game at 2-2.
Salem's Kristen McKenzie (Arlington, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game winner with 6:26 remaining in regulation when she scored with a wrist shot from the left wing, with assists coming from Caroline McKinnon (Winthrop, Mass.) and Kelsey Russell (Arlington, Mass.).
Julia Johnson suffered the loss after making 21 saves while Jenn Toussaint earned the victory with 28 stops for the Vikings. The two teams will finish their CHC home and home series tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. at Salem State.
