Stevenson skates past Women's Ice Hockey, 2-0

MARLBORO, Mass. --- The Becker College women's ice hockey team lost 2-0 to visiting Stevenson University on Saturday night at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro. The Ice Hawks of Becker drop to 1-2 and 0-1 in the Colonial Hockey Conference standings while the Mustangs of Stevenson, the defending CHC Champions, improve to 2-1 and 1-0 against conference opponents.

The Mustangs came out shooting in the first period with the first eight shots on goal of the game. Becker sophomore goalkeeper Julia Johnson  (Littleton, Colo. / Walpole Express) proved up to the challenge, however, turning away a total of 14 shots in the opening stanza as the game remained scoreless at 0-0 by the end of the period.

The second period saw more of the same as Stevenson continued to pile on the shots. An apparent power play goal with 5:33 left was disallowed by the official, and once again the game remained scoreless going into intermission.

Finally, with 10:52 left in regulation and at even strength, Stevenson junior forward Chelsea Blackburn (Westland, Mich. / Team Detroit), last year's CHC Player of the Year, shot the puck past Johnson for her second goal of the year, putting the Mustangs ahead 1-0.

Then with 55.8 seconds remaining, Blackburn again found the back of the back of the net for the insurance goal, and Stevenson would hold on to win 2-0.

Johnson, the reigning Becker Athlete of the Week, finished with 45 saves for the Ice Hawks. Stevenson sophomore goalie Caitie Darosa (Madison, Conn. / The Gunnery) had 14 saves in picking up the shutout. Shots were 47-14 in favor of the Mustangs with a 27-23 edge in faceoffs.

Becker sophomore forward Bailey Coons (Casper, Wyo. / Team Wyoming) had a team-high three shots on goal for the Ice Hawks.

Up next for Becker and Stevenson, the teams will have a quick turnaround as the meet again in Marlboro on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
