UNE skates past Women's Ice Hockey, 4-1

MARLBORO, Mass. --- The Becker College women's ice hockey team lost 4-1 to visiting University of New England on Tuesday night at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro. The Ice Hawks of Becker fall to 3-7-1 while the Nor'easters of New England improve to 4-5-1.


The visitors got two quick goals in the opening minutes of the first period with a goal from senior forward Mary Wirth (South Elgin, Ill. / Team Illinois) at 5:37 and another from sophomore forward Julianne Sheehan (Chelmsford, Mass. / North Shore Vipers) at 6:35.


Down 2-0, Becker got on the board when freshman forward Brianna Luciani (Bellingham, Mass. / Walpole Express) scored at 13:44 in the first, assisted by sophomore defenseman Elysabeth Jefferies (Lisbon Falls, Maine / Hebron Academy) and sophomore defenseman Nikolle Storey (Cumberland, Maine / Kents Hill School). The teams went into the first intermission with the Nor'easters leading 2-1.


In the second period, New England scored a power play goal at 8:01 from junior forward Kierra Wright (Georgia, Vt. / Rice Prep School), taking back their two goal lead. The visitors went up 4-1 in the third off a power play from senior forward Shannon Smith (Naperville, Ill. / Pittsburgh Elite) for the final score.


Becker sophomore goaltender Madison Rigsby (O'Fallon, Mo. / Dallas Stars Elite) recorded 28 saves while senior goalie Sydney Helmbrecht (Grand Rapids, Minn. / Grand Rapids High School) finished with 14. The Nor'easters outshot the Ice Hawks, 32-15.


Becker and New England will tangle again on Saturday when the Ice Hawks travel to Biddeford, Maine for a 3:00 p.m. game
