MARLBOROUGH, Mass.- Becker College defeated Chatham University 5-2 in non-conference women's hockey action Saturday afternoon at the New England Sports Center. The win moves the Ice Hawks record to 4-9-1 while the Cougars slide to 5-7-1.
Becker got on the board just 2:57 into the game when Catherine McShera (Marston Mills, Mass.) beat Chatman goalie Sydney Isbell (Thunder Bay, Ontario) glove side on a breakaway. The Ice Hawks extended their lead to 2-0 with nine seconds remaining in the first period when Claudia Gee (Randolph, Vt.) fed Bailey Coons (Casper, Wyo.) next to the left post for her third goal of the season.
Becker scored the lone maker of the second period on a power-play goal off the stick of Brittany Aiello (Franklin Park, Ill.) to make the score 3-0.
Chatham finally found the back of the Becker net at the 5:05 mark when Cassidy Colhoun (Kincordine, Ontario) slipped a loose puck past the reach of Becker goalie Madison Rigsby (O'Fallon, Mo.).
Bailey Coons gave the Ice Hawks some extra breathing room with her second goal of the game at the 10:52 mark of the third, upping the Becker lead to 5-1.
The Cougars would add a late goal by Michelle Jones (Scarborough, Maine) to make the final 5-2.
Despite the loss, Chatham outshot the Ice Hawks by a 46-21 margin. Rigsby earned her third win of the season after turning away 44 shots while Isbell made 16 saves in the loss.
The Ice Hawks return to action on Friday, January 13th when they host Post University at 8:10 p.m.
