Coons leads Women's Ice Hockey to tie versus Johnson & Wales

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against visiting Johnson & Wales University on Saturday night at the Fidelity Worcester Ice Center in a Colonial Hockey Conference matchup.

The Hawks of Becker (1-4-1, 1-1-1 CHC) got on the board first, as junior forward Bailey Coons (Casper, Wyo. / Team Wyoming) scored her third goal of the season, an assist going to junior forward Brittany Aiello (Franklin Park, Ill. / Team Illinois) at 7:06 into the game.

The Wildcats of Johnson & Wales (0-5-2, 0-3-2 CHC) tied it up on a power play with 4:14 to go in the opening period, as junior defender Victoria Perez (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Compuware) found the back of the net for her first goal of the year, assisted by sophomore forward Cassie Wakefield (North Vancouver, British Columbia / Pacific Steelers) and sophomore forward Taylor Davi (Windsor, N.Y. / Ontario Hockey Academy).

The visitors took the lead just under a minute later when sophomore forward Kathryn Mason (Grafton, Mass. / Minutemen Lady Flames) scored her second goal of the year on an even-strength score, putting the Wildcats up 2-1.

Becker tied it up with 59 seconds left in the first period, as Coons scored her second goal of the game, assisted by sophomore defender Madison Maloney (Clovis, Calif. / Colorado Select) and sophomore forward Kate Hamilton (Walpole, Mass. / Massachusetts Spitfires).

Remarkably, despite the four combined goals in the first period, neither team could find the net in the second or third, or in the single overtime period. The game resulted in a 2-2 tie.

Becker junior goaltender Madison Rigsby (O'Fallon, Mo. / Dallas Stars Elite) recorded 25 saves in net while senior goalie Kami Weiner (Elk Grove Village, III. / Chicago Fury) had 23 stops for Johnson & Wales. The Wildcats outshot the Hawks, 27-25.

The two teams will have a quick turnaround when they return to the ice as Becker travels to Johnson & Wales on Sunday for a 1:40 p.m. game.
