LEICESTER, Mass. --- Sophomore midfielder Ciara McKissick (Charlton, Mass. / Shepherd Hill Regional) scored two goals as the Becker College women's soccer team defeated visiting Bay Path University, 2-1, in NECC action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field in Leicester. The Hawks of Becker improve to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference standings while the Wildcats of Bay Path drop to 6-5 overall and 2-3 against NECC opponents.
Bay Path got on the board first in the 15th minute when sophomore forward Jailinne Ruiz (Hadley, Mass. / Hopkins Academy) stole the ball in the backfield, breaking free for an open shot to score her tenth goal of the year, putting the Wildcats up 1-0.
The equalizer came in the 40th minute, when McKissick headed in a shot off a corner kick junior midfielder Meghan Bealka (Freetown, Mass. / Apponequet Regional). It was McKissick's fifth goal of the season, tying things up 1-1. That score would hold up going into halftime.
In the second half, the visitors had a number of scoring opportunities, only to be turned away each time. With 30:40 remaining, Becker sophomore goalkeeper Jordyn Martel (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) made one of her best saves of the season when she turned back a Bay Path penalty kick, keeping the Hawks in the game and tied at 1-1. Neither team could find the back of the net again, and they headed into overtime.
With one minute left in the first overtime period, the Wildcats setup a corner kick, resulting in a header shot right in front of the goal by senior defender Jillian Barry (Jewett City, Conn. / Griswold High School). Once again, Martel was up to the challenge, sending the game into double-overtime.
Finally, in the 108th minute, the Hawks were awarded another corner, once again taken by Bealka. The junior bent a perfect kick to the box, and McKissick found it for her second goal of the game, this time for the win, as her teammates swarmed the field in victory.
Martel finished with seven saves in net. Bay Path freshman goalkeeper Caitlyn Esposito (East Haven, Conn. / East Haven High School) accumulated six stops. The Wildcats outshot the Hawks on the day, 15-12, with a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Hawks of Becker will be back on the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Regis College to take on the Pride at 4:00 p.m. in a critical NECC matchup. The Wildcats of Bay Path play next at home on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Daniel Webster College.
