FITCHBURG, Mass. - Hawks senior Kyra Teixeira (Old Lyme, Conn.) continued the great start to her senior season, scoring a pair of goals on Tuesday afternoon in a 3-1 win for the Becker Hawks over the Fitchburg State Falcons at Elliot Field.
The two goals bring Teixeira to five goals in two games played, matching her total from last season in 19 games.
Teixeira gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the eighth minute. Following a Falcons foul, Teixeira lined up a free kick from 30 yards out and struck a shot over the wall, past the diving Fitchburg State goalie for her first goal of the evening.
Over an hour of game time past before the Hawks doubled their advantage in the 70th minute with Teixeira's second goal of the game. A pass came from the midfield area, finding Teixeira, who touched it past the keeper to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Junior Shannon Kelley (Bellingham, Mass.) tacked on another for Becker in the 77th minute for her second goal of the season. Senior Meghan Ballentine (Gardner, Mass.) had the assist on the goal, sending in a cross from the right side that found Kelley about 10 yards from goal. Kelley volleyed a shot into the far side netting to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Falcons broke up the shutout in the 87th minute on a penalty kick goal by senior Micaela Goldenburg (Douglas, Mass.). Goldenburg fired her attempt on freshman Olivia Sherwood (Southington, Conn.) to her right side and despite diving correctly, Goldenburg's shot still snuck past Sherwood, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Sherwood earned her first career victory and moves to 1-0 with a nine-save evening. Falcons freshman Dania Politi (Springfield, Mass.) surrendered three goals in her loss, falling to 0-1. Politi finished with eight stops.
Becker moves up to 2-1 on the season while Fitchburg State falls to 1-2.
The Hawks don't return until the weekend as they welcome Thomas College on Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. match. The Falcons continue their season with a Saturday matinee at Suffolk.
