Leicester, Mass. – Opening up New England Collegiate Conference play was just what the Becker College women's tennis team needed to shake off back-to-back losses. The Hawks posted a resounding 7-2 victory over Bay Path University on Saturday, September 12.
The victory improved Becker's mark to 2-3 overall as they avenge a pair of losses to the Wildcats last season. It is also the first win in the conference opener for the Hawks since 2011 when they defeated Regis.
Becker set the tone for the day by taking two of the three doubles points. The team of Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) and Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.) rolled to an 8-1 win at number two over Katie Leibowitz and Katrina Minnion. The Hawks secured a second point when Jessica Leger (Auburn, Mass.) and Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) won the tiebreaker at number three for the 9-8 win versus Yesmel Rosario and Kimberly Drahushuk.
The Hawks made sure of the team victory by winning five of the six singles matches. Junior Livia Smith (Worcester, Mass.) rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at number three over Rosario. Leger also pitched a shutout, dropping Leibowtiz, 6-0, 6-0. The freshman Wodell cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 decision versus Minnion.
The rest of the singles matches were much closer. Junior Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) won a second set tie breaker at number one to prevail, 6-0, 7-6 against Brittany Walsh. After winning the first set 7-6, Andrade need a second-set tiebreaker to beat Taylor Wood at number two singles. With the team victory, secured, Mahan beat Edna Aboaxge, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10).
Becker goes on the road for its next three matches, starting Tuesday, September 15, versus Newbury
