Leicester, Mass. - New England Collegiate Conference action has agreed with the Becker College women's tennis team. The Hawks continued to play well in the league on Tuesday (October 6) as they downed Mitchell College, 7-2. The win guaranteed Becker the second seed in the upcoming NECC Tournament.
The victory improved Becker's record to 6-2 in the NECC and 7-7 overall. The Mariners dropped to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the league.
The Hawks started the match by securing two of the three doubles points. The team of sophomore Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) and senior Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, Calif.) disposed of Brittany Fuller and Danielle Autieri, 8-2. At number two, the tandem of sophomore Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) and Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.) topped Dominique Lacroix and Lehayla Cruz, 8-4.
During singles, Becker got two quick points when Saltvick rolled through Autieri, 6-2, 6-0 at number six and Smith triumphed at number three, 6-4, 6-0 over Lacroix. Andrade secured the team victory by taking down Schall 6-2, 6-2 at number two.
The Hawks picked up two more points to finish off the match. Woddell won the first set tiebreaker on her way to a 7-6, 6-1 win over Fuller at number five. Lord bounced back from not winning a game in the first set to take her number one singles match against Ryan 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. Mitchell's lone win in singles came at number four where Cruz topped Mahan, 6-4, 0-6, 6-1.
The Hawks are back in action on Thursday (October 8) when they travel to Lesley for a 7:30 p.m. match. Becker beat Lesley, 5-4, earlier in the year.
