LEICESTER, Mass. – A close second set turned the tide as the Becker College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Anna Maria College on Tuesday (September 15). The AMCATS prevailed 25-9, 29-27, 25-20.
The Hawks fell to 2-4 on the year while Anna Maria evened its record at 5-5.
Anna Maria's ability to handle Becker's serve and get into its offense was the difference in the match. The visitors had a distinct advantage in kills (44-to-16) and hitting percentage (.209-to-.049).
Outside hitter Cheyenne Melanson (Sandown, N.H) led Becker with seven kills. Freshman Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J.) contributed four kills, four aces and six digs. Libero Brittany Bullis (Stafford, Va.) topped all players with 14 digs.
Anna Maria's Amari King produced a match-high 14 kills. Setter Samantha Parker recorded a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs.
Twice in set two it looked like Anna Maria was going to pull away from Becker, but the Hawks fought back each time. Becker erased 15-11 and 21-17 deficits before taking a 23-22 lead on an attack error. The Hawks had two set points, but couldn't put away frame as they committed three errors to give the AMCATS the set, 29-27.
Aces by Courtney Cotnoir (Douglas, Mass.) and Turner were part of a 6-2 Becker run that staked it to a 15-8 lead in the third set. After Anna Maria tied the match at 16, Dupree had a kill and an ace to push the Becker lead to 18-16. Unfortunately, a bad set and two aces down the stretch gave the AMCATS the match.
Becker goes on the road for two matches this weekend, taking on MCLA and Green Mountain on Saturday.
