Volleyball Rallies To Defeat Southern Vermont 3-0

LEICESTER, Mass. – It could have been a long evening for the Becker College volleyball team but the Hawks fought back in the second and third sets to sweep its New England Collegiate Conference match against Southern Vermont College on Thursday night. The Hawks prevailed 25-18, 25-20, 26-24.

The victory improved Becker's record to 9-11 overall and 2-1 in the NECC. The Mountaineers dropped to 2-10, 1-3 in the NECC.

The match was on its way to a fourth set as SVC held a 22-12 advantage. A kill by junior Cheyenne Melanson (Sandown, N.H.) ignited a 7-0 run off the serve of Erin Sacharanski (Union Beach, N.J.) that was aided by four Mountaineer miscues. Two Marissa Turner (Coventry, Mass.) aces and a kill from Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J.) gave BC its first lead, 24-23. Southern Vermont tied the match at 24-24, but committed an error then a Samantha Caouette (Montague, Mass.) kill ended the match.

The senior Caouette led the Hawks with eight kills Turner, Melanson and Dupree were next with five winners. Turner also had seven aces while Dupree contributed four blocks. Sophomore Charlene Landry (Gorham, Maine) notched a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Brittney Bullis (Stafford, Va.) led all players with 16 digs.

The Mountaineers' Alycia Stevens had a match-high 16 kills to go along with 14 assists. Setter Sheilani Kaleopa recorded a game-high 21 assists.

Even though it had three less kills, Becker had a .151-to-.053 edge in hitting percentage. The Hawks also benefited from 12 aces.

The Hawks seized control early in the first set. Caouette went on a 4-0 service run that turned a one-point game into a five point Becker advantage it would hold the rest of the set.

Becker spotted the Mountaineers a five-point advantage, 10-5, in the second set before mounting a comeback. Out of a time out, the Hawks got two aces from Turner during a 7-3 run that pulled Becker within a point, 13-12. The Hawks claimed their first lead, 18-17, on a block by Landry and Turner then finished on a 7-3 run to claim the second stanza.

Becker plays host to a tri match on Saturday (October 17) including an 11 a.m. conference match against Lesley. The Hawks also take on Pine Manor at 3 p.m.
