Women's Volleyball Season Preview 2019

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's volleyball program opens their 2019 season this weekend under third-year head coach Hugo Ortega.

"I'm actually very excited about the start of the season." Ortega said. "Morgan (senior right side Morgan Gould (North Attleboro, Mass. / Tri-County)), Sofi (senior outside hitter Sofia Cullina (Deep River, Conn. / Valley Regional)) and Gillian (senior middle blocker Gillian Criddle (Earleville, Md. / Bohemia Manor)) are my captains. They know the game, and have improved tremendously in the last 3 years."

Cullina is coming off a season in which she set the school's career digs record. Those three upper-classmen will be joined by sophomore libero Joanna Bampi (Peabody, Mass. / Peabody Veterans Memorial), who was voted to the NECC All-Conference team this past year as a freshman.

Ortega also spoke at length about his incoming freshman class of outside hitter Teddie Flynn (Amesbury, Mass. / Essex Tech), libero Evelyn Sheehan (Charlton, Mass. / Bay Path) and middle blocker Ariana Gordon (Brockton, Mass. / West Roxbury Academy).

"We have three freshmen this year who have a lot of potential, and I think they're going to be a great asset to the team, and we can do very well this year."

"Teddie will have the biggest impact on the team." Ortega predicted. "She'll be our primary outside hitter this year."

The Hawks open their season on Saturday when they play host to Mount Holyoke College and Bridgewater State University in a tri-match, with the first contest beginning at 11:00 a.m.
