Women's Volleyball falls to Albertus Magnus in five

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Becker College women's volleyball team lost a heart-breaking five-set match to visiting Albertus Magnus College on Thursday evening at the Leicester Gymnasium on the campus of Becker College in Leicester.

FOR THE HAWKS

  • Junior right side hitter Yesenia Aviles (Southbridge, Mass. / Southbridge) led Becker with 10 kills, six service aces and 16 digs. Aviles hit a match-high .257 on the night.
  • Freshman outside hitter Teddie Flynn (Amesbury, Mass. / Essex Tech) finished with 11 kills and 29 digs.
  • Senior setter Olivia McGuinness (Colchester, Conn. / Bacon Academy) setup the offense with 30 set assists to go along with four service aces and 12 digs.
  • Sophomore libero Joanna Bampi (Peabody, Mass. / Peabody Veterans) led the defense with 37 digs to go along with two aces.
  • Senior outside hitter Sofia Cullina (Deep River, Conn. / Valley Regional) finished with five kills, two aces and 24 digs.
  • Freshman middle blocker Ariana Gordon (Brockton, Mass. / West Roxbury Academy) added eight kills and three total blocks.

 

FOR THE FALCONS

  • Freshman middle hitter Diana Kalman (Naugatuck, Conn. / East Haven) posted a match-high 18 kills with 22 digs to lead Albertus Magnus.
  • Sophomore right side hitter Maria Vazquez (Hamden, Conn. / Hamden) contributed 11 kills and 18 digs.
  • Freshman middle hitter Irene Ronan (West Haven, Conn. / West Haven) added 11 kills, hitting .242.  
  • Sophomore setter Jaiden Williams (Orange, Conn. / Amity) finished with 38 set assists and four service aces.

 

TURNING POINT

  • Becker was leading 21-20 in the fourth set after a kill by Cullina, with a chance to close out. But Albertus Magnus finished on a 5-1 run to force the fifth. The Falcons exploded to a 6-0 lead in the final set. The Hawks attempted to rally, pulling ahead 12-11, but it was the visitors down the stretch, with Vazquez getting the final point off a kill.  

 

UP NEXT
The Hawks are back on the court on Saturday when they host a tri-match against UMass Dartmouth and Fisher College. Becker will open against the Corsairs at 11:00 a.m. before playing the Falcons of Fisher at 3:00 p.m. in the final match of the day. The Falcons of Albertus Magnus, meanwhile, will host Curry College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
